SCAC Championships

This weekend, Trinity's soccer teams will travel to Birmingham, AL to participate in the first SCAC Soccer Championship Tournament since 1992. The SCAC chose Birmingham, AL as the pre-determined site for both tournaments. Both the men's and women's teams enter the 2011 SCAC Championships as the #1 seed and will await the quarterfinal winners from Friday, November 4 in Saturday's Semifinal. The ladies finished their second undefeated regular season in the past three seasons going 18-0. The regular season finale took place last Sunday in Irving, TX. Despite outshooting the University of Dallas 27-3, it took nearly the duration of regulation and the first overtime to find the back of the net. Team and conference goalscoring leader, first-year, Stephanie Segovia, netted her 22nd goal of the season as she broke free on the left side smacking a ball into the top of the far corner. The goal secured the immediate win as well as the top seed in this weekend's tournament.

A note to remember....

The NCAA championship committee will announce the 64-team field on Monday, November 7. Currently sitting atop the NCAA's West Region rankings, Trinity will be hoping to extend their 2011 win streak to 19...and then 20...which would secure the AQ from the SCAC. The girls are well aware of the importance of the UPCOMING match, and will not be looking beyond that. That matchup will be against the winner of #4 Rhodes and #5 Hendrix.

Up next for the Tigers is a match in Irving, TX against the University of Dallas. This will conclude the regular season, and will serve as the final preparation for the SCAC Championships in Birmingham, AL November 4-6. Trinity has secured the #1 seed in the tournament and will await the winner of Quarterfinal #1 featuring #4-v-#5 on November 4. The semifinal will be played on November 5 at 12 noon CST. The Final is slated for November 6 at 11 AM.

Following a wonderful celebration of the Trinity Soccer Family on Saturday evening at the residence of Vice President Chuck White and wife, Judy, we had take the field on Sunday against a much improved Hendrix side that was riding a stretch of games without a loss. Hendrix arrived onto campus on Sunday holding on tightly to the #2 spot in the SCAC Conference table. With a win, we would secure a bye into the semi-final round of the upcoming SCAC Conference Tournament in Birmingham, AL.

This fixture would coincide with Senior Day for five very special young women that have persisted and persevered into one of the most remarkable and influential class of players to come the program.

Abigail Loar-Littleton, CO; Anthropology

In their nearly four year career, they have played an integral role, both individually and collectively, in a 65-7-2 overall record. They have gone 47-2-1 in their last 50 matches, including 34 consecutive regular season wins. In conference play, they have produced a 32-3-0 record, which includes 27 consecutive SCAC wins, outscoring conference opponents 112-16. They have won two consecutive SCAC Championships, and have secured the 2011 SCAC Conference Regular Season Championship following the win at Austin College.

These incredible young women embody extraordinary values as citizens, students, and athletes. They have been catalysts in establishing a culture within the Trinity Soccer program that thrives on excellence in every facet of life. The legacy they have, and will leave behind serves as a model for those after them to follow and a standard for them to pursue.

RECORD UPDATE: Senior, Abby Loar, would score her 6th game winner in the match against Hendrix, and add an insurance goal to take over the position of Trinity All-Time Points Leader, and pull even in the All-Time Goals leader board. She has since added two more goals in the last two matches since then , as the Tigers secured victories against Huston-Tillotson (W 7-0) and Austin College (W 2-0).

Reflecting back in my life, I seem always to recall the most vivid memories from photos my Ma has either taken, kept, found, or some combination of two or three...

This past weekend, Trinity Soccer took some time out of a sometimes hectic schedule to be amongst family. We think of true family being based far deeper than blood and genes. We are a group defined by a great number of common threads within the social fabric that ultimately binds us. We share a commitment to a standard of excellence in who we are, what we give, sacrifices made, what we aim to become, and how we love, honor and respect each other. We are driven and motivated by...inspired by each other.

Rather than recapping this incredibly special event, I'll take a page from my mother (Ma) and show a few photos that'll hopefully better tell a story of what Trinity Soccer is truly about...

Many faces are not present in this tiny collection, but they are a big part of the story. Seeing 250 Trinity University Faculty, Staff, Student-Athletes, Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Nieces, Cousins, Alumni, Husbands, Wives, Supporters...FAMILY MEMBERS...all gathered in support of the 60-something current players on the men's and women's soccer rosters never ceases to amaze me.

I am so very grateful to God for the blessings in my life...for the opportunity to be a part of this incredible family.

Trinity Wins

Trinity Soccer took on Southwestern University this past Friday night in its fifth conference fixture of the season. Southwestern entered the match at 1-3 in SCAC play and were in dire need of a result to keep hopes alive for making the upcoming SCAC Conference Championships in Birmingham, AL the first weekend of November.

The girls were well aware of the circumstances and realized the importance of dictating the flow of the match from the start. Senior, Abby Loar got the Tigers on the board in the 19th minute as she flew through a Tara Sparks cross at the back post. Youngster, Stephanie Segovia came on in the 26th minute and tallied the second goal of the game and the 17th of her first collegiate season off a feed from Samantha Atkins in just ten minutes. Kristina Chen would score the game's third goal (her third in two games) following a fantastic first touch that matched the combination from Segovia and classmate, Emily Jorgens. Trinity went into halftime up 3-0 and very much in control of the match, but a few things to tidy up.

The second half was just over six minutes old and Abby had banged in two more for an early hat-trick followed by a long rest. Senior, Kelly Watts continues to provide tremendous service and creativity as she assisted to make the game 4-0 and Atkins dished up her second assist for the fifth goal. A minute later, Atkins would hit the post...TWICE...within a minute, narrowly missing on increasing her scoring contribution to the game. Segovia would notch another goal as Chen would reciprocate from her earlier goal, creating a quality chance for her teammate. Segovia was not done, however, this time getting ahold of the ball in the final third and creating a chance for herself that she drove past the keeper for her second hat-trick in as many matches and her third on the year. Her goalscoring total reached 19 on the year. Katie Garrett, Devan Osegueda, and Lauren Goldberg all combined in goal for the shutout. Garrett registered one save on the lone shot in the first half by Southwestern. Lauren saw two balls come her way in the closing minutes, one going just over the bar and the other off frame as well.

Trinity heads into Friends & Family Weekend and will face Hendrix College on Sunday at noon. Hendrix come to Texas riding a four-game conference winning streak and are currently in second place in the SCAC standings along with Birmingham Southern. Birmingham Southern have a game-in-hand.

Heading into Trinity Soccer Friends and Family Weekend, two forwards push closer and closer to some long-standing Trinity Soccer bests.

Senior forward, Abigail Loar, of Littleton, CO has climbed her way up the ladder of career scoring marks. Last week's hat-trick moved he within three goals of overtaking former Tiger, Becky King (incidentally, also from Colorado), as the all-time leader in career goals. She drew even with King at second in the all-time points list, needing only two points to take position at the top, overtaking King's former teammate Erica Adelstein. Loar has tallied 50 career goals with the current record of 52. Her accumulation of total points totals 133 with the record being 134. As a point of clarification, goals count as two points and assists count as one.

Teammate Stephanie Segovia, a first-year from Buda, TX has racked up 19 goals in 14 games thus far in the 2011 campaign. She is currently tied for third in Trinity single-season goals with Lindsay Rowland Horn who tallied 19 in the 2001 season. Becky King, a familiar name in Trinity Soccer history is second on the list with a 22-goal performance during 2000, which was Trinity Soccer's first visit to the Final 4. Tara Dillon hit the back of the net 24 times in the 1991 campaign and is atop that prestigious list. Stephanie just topped the list of hat-tricks in a season with three. The second and third came consecutively within the last week as Trinity topped Millsaps 10-1 and Southwestern 7-0.

As a matter of interest, the aforementioned Adelstein has recorded the most assists in a single-season (20) as well as in a career (58). Second on those lists is Trinity Athletics Hall-of-Fame Member Tanya Zwick Rinebarger with 18 and 36 respectively.

Rankings and Awards

Trinity Soccer has remained in the top 5 in both National Rankings for the duration of the regular season thus far, and sits 3rd in both polls for the week. 2010 National Finalists and Semifinalists sit in the top 2 positions.

Trinity tops the NCAA in goals scored with 81 in 14 matches thus far, totaling 5.79 goals per game, as well as winning percentage at 14-0-0. The girls also rank in the top 5 in Goals Against (0.28) and Shutout Percentage (0.786).

Trinity continues to be recognized in the SCAC for individual performances, garnering player-of-the-week honors consistently. Since the first week, Trinity has placed at least on player on the list of honorees in six of the seven weeks.

Alumni Weekend, Breast Cancer Awareness and Hall-of-Fame Class of 2011

Rhodes at home on a Friday night is always a fun match. They would be coming in without a loss in conference, and we knew we would have some work to do to prepare for the match. Last year in Memphis, it was a 2-1 final where we missed some chances to put the game away and they capitalized on a late counter to draw close.

This year, the match would come with some...."extras". Tanya Zwick Rinebarger, a former Trinity Soccer Hall-of-Famer (is it me or have we been around a lot of Hall-of-Famers lately?!) would return to campus with husband, Trent, and her folks to celebrate her induction into the Trinity University Athletics Hall-of Fame. Tanya would be joined by a number of her former teammates and their future tiger soccer players, as well as Nick Cowell, former Trinity Women's Soccer Coach, and current coach at St. Edward's. It was fantastic having everyone back to participate in this memorable event. Tanya is the first ever Trinity Soccer Player to enter the Hall-of-Fame.

Trinity player Ally Hunter, the current president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) spear-headed a campus fundraiser with the goal of generating $10,000 to present to a local organization, Texas WINGS. Owen Collie, the women's assistant coach was largely responsible for generating a large amount of money from supporting businesses through his mother (a breast cancer survivor, herself) and father. In the end, during the pre-match ceremony, Trinity University First Lady, Penelope Harley, several SAAC student-athletes and Athletics Director, Bob King, presented checks of $6000 and $12,000 to Susan G. Komen For the Cure and Texas WINGS, respectively. The fundraising went on throughout the weekend, and is expected to total approximately $20,000 on behalf of Trinity University. Well done Ally, to you and your peers!!

Time for Kick-off!!!

The first half of the match was less than inspiring, and really wasn't much to be said for it in either direction. Halftime required some adjustments and recognition of where we needed to adapt our game, and the girls responded...did they ever!!

Stephanie Segovia, our leading goal scorer for the 2011 campaign would bag the first goal of the second half, and the eventual game winner less than two minutes in. Seniors Kelly Watts and Abby Loar would combine for the assist. The lethal connection of Stephanie and Abby would combine again only a few minutes later, only this time Abby would notch the goal to put Trinity up 2-0. Only three minutes later, Emily Jorgenswould tally her tenth goal of the campaign. The rhythm would settle for a quarter of an hour, but pick back up again in the 71st minute after Shelby Guenthardt would draw some contact in the box and be awarded a penalty, which she would take very well and stretch the lead to four.To close out the game, Riah Risk would smack a ball that was too heavy for the keeper to handle, splitting her hands and crossing the line, and then less than a minute later, Michelle Lanier would play a great early ball in behind the Rhodes back line for Annie Kendzior to run on to, running the score to 6-0.

Saturday on Alumni weekend always means a 10:00 AM alumni game followed by lunch with the current and former players at Bombay's. This Saturday would have a little more to it in that it would be followed by a reception for Tanya. It was great to see the current players getting to know a Trinity Soccer legend as they honored and respected her career.

Sunday would come with torrential downpours and flash flooding in the early hours. Millsaps had made their way down I-35 from Georgetown, and we were not about to allow the wet conditions to put us off our objective. We would get things going early scoring first in the eighth minute and nine more times up until the 89th minute. Annie Kendzior got the game-winner and completed her hat trick in less than seven and a half minutes. Senior Kristina Chen would score in the 20th minute and the 86th minute. Stephanie Segovia scored her 14th, 15th and 16th goals of the season in a hat trick of her own. Riah Risk would have a repeat of her Friday night goal with a shot that overpowered the hands of the goalkeeper in the 49th minute. Shelby Guenthardt would also add to her season total with a goal in the 59th. Hannah Kuhl and Michelle Lanier would each register two assists on the day while seniors Abby Loar and Nikki Blavet would provide one apiece. Goalkeepers Katie Garrett, Devan Osegueda and Lauren Goldberg would all three combine for the win.

In all, it was a fantastic weekend. Six more points in conference, celebrating a Tiger legend, and a lot of experience and memories to fill in the gaps. We look forward to seeing the former players again soon, and look forward to another conference match on Friday. See you soon!

SCAC Openers

The ladies took to the road...and the air last weekend to open up SCAC play in Danville, KY and Sewanee, TN on Friday night and Sunday afternoon, respectively. Leaving San Antonio VERY early on Thursday morning, and carrying a 9-0 record, we were in for a very long weekend against a couple of formidable opponents. We had been banging goals in left, right, and center during the first half of the season, but we expected the weekend to be much closer. A few of the girls opted to seek out the guidance of a defensive genius on the way out to get a few tips on limiting their opposition's shots and scoring opportunities. Former NBA and San Antonio Spurs player, and future Pro Basketball Hall-of-Famer Bruce Bowen took a moment to accommodate the requests of the girls, and thankfully so, as we only gave up six shots in the two matches!

Another Hall-of-Famer, the LEGEND, Secretariat made the list of inspirational sportsmen that crossed our path over the weekend. Claiborne Farm in Paris, KY was our mid-morning destination on Friday prior to our 6 pm kickoff at Centre. Seth Hancock's farm was home to the late Secretariat, and a number of his descendants as well as his lineage since he passed in 1989.The horse is truly an amazing animal, and these racehorses did not fail to impress us all. Pulpit was the first horse that we had the opportunity to interact with. Apparently, this guy is a pretty big deal, as his stud fee is $60,000 per live foal!! In his short, but very successful racing career, he racked up nearly three quarters of a million in earnings.The inspiration was clearly in place...all that was left was to get it done in Danville.

Centre has posed a consistent challenge over time, and playing them in Danville adds another layer to the challenge...especially when you concede within the first ten minutes...which we did. We were going to be called to find some of the goal scoring that had lead us into the match, needing two to win take the match back.It took us 85 minutes to break the seal with a good ball from the left hand side by Kelly Watts into the feet of Emily Jorgens who showed a bit of brilliance cutting the ball onto her left foot to find the bottom of the inside corner. We were destined for overtime, and we were going to need a hero.Overtime went both ways with opportunities on both ends through the first 10 minutes. We changed ends, and with time ticking away, Kelly made a fantastic run across the back line, rounded the corner and served in a great ball to the back post where Abby Loar would find the net for another game winner. Trinity 2-Centre 1.

A long trip is always better following a good result, and a long trip to the mountain top it would be. As always, the first stop is at the WWII memorial on the back side of the mountain looking down into the valley with one of the most serene views you can find.The conditions at game time were fantastic for the players, and the tone was set VERY early. Abby would find her way in behind the back line and slot one home inside 90 seconds to put us up 1-0.Just inside ten minutes to play, Shelby Guenthardt would take a ball from Abby on the edge of the six and find the inside of the far post to send us to halftime 2-0. First year, Stephanie Segovia would make a great turn at the edge of the eighteen yard box with seven minutes to play and pushed the lead to 3-0.

Starting the SCAC on the road and with two wins is exactly what we set out to do and exactly what we did. Back home for two more SCAC matches and Alumni weekend.

This past week has been extremely interesting. I'll give you a quick report on the two matches we've played since you last heard from me, and then I'll take a moment to reflect on a couple of dear friends, a lot of memories, and the future of Trinity Soccer.

Sunday, September 18, 2011
Georgetown, TX; Trinity -v- UC Santa Cruz W 4-0

We had an early departure from campus on Sunday morning heading for Georgetown, just north of Austin for what would amount to about a two hour drive...not including the potty pit stop...which I have come to accept as part of the territory! We made it about half-way, although the requests started about 15 minutes after the departure from campus.

The afternoon turned out to be hot and humid, and much more still than normal on the Southwestern Soccer Field. Although we had a bit of a sluggish start, giving up a couple of balls in behind our back line, first-year, Emily Jorgens, who I expect to be a pretty recognizable name by the time this campaign goes into the history books, got on the board with a well-timed near post run to get on the end of a ball driven in from the endline by senior, Abby Loar, and tucked it into the near post with her first touch. Almost a half-hour later, two other first-years combined to add to the lead. Riah Risk, served in a dangerous ball to the far post, which was challenged by a cluster of players, only to drop back to the goal line where Stephanie Segovia was waiting to play the ball past the flailing defenders for her team-leading 9th goal. Shortly thereafter, we would break for halftime where the instruction would be to sharpen up our organization, anticipate and play quicker. Apparently quick was translated into 120 seconds or less as Riah would slip around the left side a weight in a pass as Abby worked in-between two defenders to push the ball into the 18-yard box and then once again to round the keeper and tuck it in the net. Emily would repay the favor to Abby in the 70th minute to extend the lead to 4-0, with Abby notching her second goal of the afternoon. The score would remain at 4-0, in spite of some careless defending and disorganization in the last quarter of an hour and a couple of good looks by the Banana Slugs and a fantastic save by goalkeeping newcomer, Lauren Goldberg. The long trip back down I-35 is always much more enjoyable after a good result!

Paul McGinlay Field; Trinity -v- Our Lady of the Lake University W 4-0

This match would have a unique pre-match festivity. The university would call together members of several eras of Trinity University and Trinity Soccer to dedicate our newly renovated facility to current Men's Soccer Head Coach, and my former coach and current mentor, Paul McGinlay (Paul McGinlay Soccer Field) and former Men's Soccer player, and my former teammate, Tim "Tito" Isom (Isom Memorial) who tragically lost his life at the age of 24 in 2000. More to be said on this a little later...

Our Lady of the Lake University, a local NAIA school in San Antonio arrived to newly dedicated Paul McGinlay Field trying to avenge a loss from a couple of seasons ago. The first quarter of an hour was played in our attacking half and it was first-year Emily Jorgens scoring off a long service into the box from fellow first-year Kirby Peddicord for what would amount to her team and league leading fourth game-winner of the season. Just under eight minutes later, two more first-years combined for the second goal of the evening when Riah Risk took a ball from Kelsey Falcone and found the old onion bag! The remainder of the half would be limited in terms of quality chances, but accounted for the visitors only shot of the evening off a long free kick that would be easily collected by goalkeeper, Katie Garrett. Coming back for the second half, the players played with confidence starting at the back of our shape with goalkeeper, Devan Osegueda, who is carrying a 0.21 GAA through the first half of the season! In the 69th minute, Katy Lipscomb would get up to challenge a corner. That ball would redirect to Emily Jorgens who would play it past the keeper with her first touch and even up her goals scored to her goals created at 8 a piece through the same number of matches. Junior, Lindsay Euers would tally the fourth goal of the evening after having battled in the middle of midfield to help ensure we didn't give up any scoring chances from the run of play. Senior, Nikki Blavet served up a great corner for Lindsay, who incidentally was just named defensive-player-of-the-week in the SCAC. She has battled back from an early season injury and has begun to regain her form of late.

This upcoming week slates Trinity Soccer against UMHB on Tuesday evening, and then onto the always exciting Centre/Sewanee trip to open up 2011 Conference play. Both teams have proven to be formidable opposition, especially within recent years. We are looking forward to the three upcoming challenges!!

REFLECTION....

The dedication ceremony led by University President Dennis Ahlburg and Athletics Director Bob King was a very touching event for the 300+ in attendance at 6:30 pm Friday evening. It was great to see a number of my former teammates in attendance to support the man that was primarily responsible for our affiliation and allegiance to Trinity University and Trinity Soccer. It was also incredible to see the support of Trinity trustees, parents of alumni, and other members of the Trinity University community. We all were there to not only celebrate the career of Trinity Soccer legend, Paul McGinlay, but also a former member of our family, Timothy "Tito" Isom.

Tim was a teammate of mine in the mid-to-late 1990's, who died unexpectedly at the age of 24, just a short time after graduation from Trinity. Members of Tito's family made yet another trip back to celebrate the memory of Tim, and all that he brought to each of our lives. Tim's father spoke on behalf of his mother, sister, and really the many families that have been a part of Trinity Soccer through the years, citing the importance Trinity Soccer has had in our pasts and presents. Members of the current men's team sat front and center in their jersey's alongside Chi Delta Tau's current and alumni members as former classmate of mine, Scott Mury spoke about the incredible qualities Tim exemplified through his life. All that spoke on the evening captured a piece of what Trinity Soccer has meant to me, but I felt myself drifting to memories of Tito climbing over forwards getting on the end of punts from opposing goalkeepers. Recalling his goal off a corner and being the first player there to congratulate him...and his video commentary as we all sat in center field at a Twins game while a couple in front of us enjoyed each other's company more than the game...or the man in baggage claim apparently missing his bags (most of you will not understand those references, which is ok, but they captured Tito's wit and joy for life).

It all led me to remember what Trinity Soccer is...its history and tradition. Simply, it is a family. We prioritize family...First...ALWAYS. It reminded me of the experience of loss. We all lose...wallets, games, hair...and yes family. Much of what I understand as reality, and experienced as truths, has come through time that God has blessed me with as a member of Trinity Soccer. Eliminate the gender distinction...nevermind our high schools or hometowns...because as we walk into the locker room for the first time to pull on a Trinity Soccer jersey, we become an extension of one...one family...the Trinity Soccer Family. Parents, like my mom, Patti, and spouses, like my wife, Natalie, get equally wrapped up in the vicarious experiences of the ones they love.

*Love one another....even at times when it seems hard to like them.
*Choose to work hard...very hard...every day.
*Be responsible for our roles within the family.
*Be accountable for the choices we make...knowing with every choice comes a result of some kind.
*Dream...BIG. If we settle for accepting the natural we'll limit our experience to those we know and never break through to the unknown...the SUPERnatural.
*Never give up...HOPE must always remain alive!
*Be grateful for what we have.

With each new day, we make choices that will direct tomorrow. We choose to overachieve...or in other words...to achieve things previously known as dreams.

Playing Catch Up!!?

I realize this is coming far too late, so please accept my apologies. I think this blog has been entirely inactive since last spring. We have seen a great deal of change on MANY levels since last you heard from me here....and it is my hope to catch you up all at once...so GET READY!!

FACILITY

Above: You are looking at the team bench areas as well as the Isom Memorial.

Above: The spectator seating has been extended to each endline, stretching the entire length of the field, opposite the team areas.

In all, the facility, named Paul McGinlay Field and to be dedicated on September 23, prior to kickoff of our match against OLLU, underwent a renovation of just over $1,000,000 over the spring and early summer.

The 2011 team consists of 11 new faces combined with 14 returners.

SEASON is under way!!!

The 2011 campaign has gotten off to a blazing start, both with regards to the results, as well as the schedule itself. From September 1-September 11, the girls were charged with six matches, all at home and included the early season re-match against our in-state rival, Hardin Simmons, who was coming in as the defending National Champions. Facility Upgrade!!

Trinity University has begun construction and renovation projects at the Trinity Soccer Stadium and surrounding areas.

Construction began over the holiday break on the Timothy “Tito” Isom Memorial Center, which will include a press box with upgraded filming and webcasting capabilities. Another addition will be a covered red brick team bench structure that will house both the home and visiting players and coaches during all home soccer games at Trinity.
The Isom Center is named for the late Tito Isom – a former men’s soccer standout from 1994-98 who died unexpectedly in September 2000.

The spectator area also will be renovated to increase permanent seating for friends, family, alumni, and fans of Tiger soccer, as well as enlarge the stadium’s capacity.

Meadows Pavilion, which has various uses both at soccer games and with general campus uses, also will be renovated to expand the restroom facilities and enhance the overall structure.

“These new improvements to the soccer field will bring our venue up to the high standards set by our men’s and women’s soccer programs, under the leadership of Coach Paul McGinlay and Coach Lance Key,” explained Director of Athletics Bob King. “This will also enhance our ability to host championships and other quality events at our facility.”

Trinity’s men’s and women’s soccer teams are perennial playoff participants, and have frequently been ranked in the top five nationally under McGinlay and Key. McGinlay recently completed his 20th season at Trinity, and led the 2003 team to the NCAA Division III National Championship. Key, a three-time All-American from 1996-99, has led the Tiger women to five SCAC Championships and two appearances in the NCAA Quarterfinals (2005, 2009) in his seven seasons with the team.

“We see this as the beginning of renovations and support of all athletics facilities,” continued King. “Improvements such as this will not only help augment the student-athlete experience at Trinity, but also will improve the atmosphere for Tiger fans.”

Women's Soccer Players Earn Post-Season Recognition

The 2010 season was one marked by success both on the field and in the classroom for not only our team, but also a number of players.

In exclusive voting by the coaches within the SCAC, seven players were selected to the SCAC All-Conference team after finishing a second consecutive season with a perfect conference record at 10-0.

Abby Loar, a junior forward from Littleton, Colo., was selected as Offensive Player-of-the-Year. Abby led the league in scoring with 16 goals and 11 assists for 43 points, including five game-winners (tied for second in the SCAC). The 16 goals scored by Loar represent the most in a single-season by any conference women’s player since the 2005 season. After scoring a SCAC-high 15 goals last season, Loar is the first player since 2006 to lead the league in goals scored in consecutive seasons and just the fifth in the history of the league to accomplish the feat. Loar is the sixth Trinity player in the last seven years to earn at least a share of the league’s Offensive Player-of-the-Year award.

Joining Abby on the first team were senior captains Jordan Azar (Albuquerque, NM) and Danika Wright (Alpine, UT) as well as classmate Ally Thrall (Scottsdale, AZ). Kelly Watts (Lakewood, WA) and goalkeeper Katie Garrett (Joshua, TX) were second team selections and sophomore Lindsay Euers (Austin, TX) made her second appearance in as many years, this time as a third team selection.

ESPN The Magazine recognized forward, Kelly Watts, with a selection to their Women's Soccer Academic All-American Team. Kelly registered 11 goals and 8 assists in the 2010 campaign while maintaining better than a 3.8 GPA in her classical studies and business administration double major.

Watts, Loar, Azar and Wright also found themselves selected to the NSCAA's Academic All-West Region team. That qualified all four players for consideration for the NSCAA Scholar All-American team which Abby, Danika and Jordan were ultimately recognized for which was a repeat for Danika Wright and Jordan Azar who also earned NSCAA Scholar All-America selections in 2009.

Abby Loar and Jordan Azar were also recognized with selections to the NSCAA and the D3Soccer.com All-American teams for 2010.

Sophomore Lindsay Euers was recognized by the SCAC Conference Office by being named to the 2010 All-Sportsmanship Team.

19 players were honored with 2010 Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll selections. Seniors Jordan Azar, Lauren Folkman, Danika Wright and Lindsey Neubauer, Juniors Nikki Blavet, Kristina Chen, Ally Hunter, Abby Loar, Ally Thrall and Kelly Watts, Sophomores Lindsay Euers, Katie Garrett and Brianna Tammaro, and First-years Shelby Guenthardt, Sarah Hanel, Michelle Lanier, Meredith McDowell, Hannah Westberg and Jenni White were recognized for their classroom performance and maintaining a minimum of 3.25 for the fall semester.

The 2010 team completed the season with an 18-2-0 record (10-0-0 in conference play), a trip to the NCAA National Tournament and a #10 national ranking. Additionally, the team was recognized by the NSCAA with the Team academic Award after maintaining over a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

Well done to these ladies and their teammates for continued to set the bar very high as representatives of this program.

NCAA National Tournament

We learned this week that we will be making a trip to Abilene to play Puget Sound on Saturday at 1:30 pm. The match puts two one-loss teams against each other in what proves to be one of the toughest first-round matches in the entire draw of 63 teams, but we are all very excited and looking forward to the opportunity to compete. A good week of training will be critical. The girls will be focused and ready to "Prove It".

SCAC Conference Champs

We returned from a fairly arduous trip through the midwest against the #2 and #3 team in the SCAC going into the final weekend of the regular season. As the top team through the first eight conference matches, the target on us would prove to be sizable but we would not fall in the end.

On Friday evening, the first half of play would include chances but little danger in either direction. The second half of the match would start slow for us, enabling them to put some pressure on our back line. Just under an hour into the match, a shot would inadvertently deflect off a defender's arm, creating a goal-scoring opportunity for the home side that they would capitalize on. Six minutes later, Katy would slip between two defenders and take her opportunity off the far post....Abby was just alert enough to read the bounce across the face of the goal and secure the equalizer with a single touch. A few minutes later, Abby again would take a ball, this time near the edge of the D and smack one past the outstretched keeper and off the inside of the far stanchion to put us in the lead. With just over ten minutes to play, Jordan dropped a nice ball in behind their back line to Katy who would tuck one away to make the game 3-1. 90 minutes would end giving us the three points and a chance to play on Sunday against Centre for the conference championship and the AQ to the NCAA's.

Sunday was and absolutely stunning day in Kentucky providing a fantastic setting to win a championship. There was so much riding on the match with it being Senior Day as well as the final match of the regular season and the post-season berth on the line. The game was not pretty, but Abby's goal was magic!! Scoring her third goal in two matches, she took a throw-in off a bounce and crushed it off the underside of the bar and into the goal for the game winner. That was all that we would need on the day and all we would get, though both sides saw good scoring opportunities.

STUDENT-Athletes

At Trinity, we place a tremendous value on balance. Priority number one is always Family. Second, we emphasize a focus on academic success. Thirdly we pursue excellence as athletes. Whatever we have opportunities to participate in beyond that list is additional blessing, but our culture identifies that list, and further the balance of those priorities as paramount. This week, three players were selected to the Academic All-District Team.

Seniors Danika Wright and Jordan Azar, both NSCAA Academic All-Americans from 2009, were selected to the second team.

Wright, from Alpine, Utah (Lone Peak), is a business administration major (accounting) with a 3.87 GPA. She has produced four goals (one game-winner), and made one assist, for nine points. Wright is an anchor of the stingy Trinity defense, which has yielded only eight goals in 16 games.

Azar, from Albuquerque, N.M. (St. Pius X), is a business administration (finance) major with a 3.60 GPA. She has made six goals (one game-winner) and accounted for eight assists, for 20 points.

Junior Kelly Watts was selected to the first team, which puts her on the short-list of candidates for the Academic All-American team as is selected by CoSIDA and presented by ESPN on November 18.

Watts, from Lakewood, Wash. (Bellarmine College Preparatory). She is a double major in classical studies major (ancient Mediterranean) and Finance with a 3.84 grade point average. Watts is second on the Tiger team in goals, with 11 (three game-winners), and has shelled out eight assists, for 30 points.

These players represent a team of STUDENT-Athletes that pride themselves on everything they do, with their academics being a tremendous part of laying groundwork for their future.

This week Katy Garrett has been named the SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week. Katy helped a team that allowed only 6 shots from the two opposing teams over the weekend, recording two shutouts. As a team, Trinity Soccer has allowed just one goal in over 800 minutes of play and has not conceded in the past 300+ minutes.

Additionally, Trinity Soccer has inched up another spot in this weeks national polls registering the #6 spot in the NSCAA and D3Soccer.com voting.

Trinity -v- Oglethorpe

Sunday's match was against a much improved conference side from Oglethorpe. This was the last of the regular season home matches for our seniors and it would be important to get a result. We were able to manage that with a 2-0 win taking us to 24 points through 8 conference matches. Our rhythm was off though through most of the match, and they had come to play with an enthusiasm that matched their overall improvement. Jordan would get the game winner on the day with Lauren getting a touch on a ball that bounced around off a corner to push it to the final margin. Katy would record both assists on the day to the two seniors. Overall the game was a difficult one on many layers. We'll be regrouping and refocusing this week in preparation for our final regular season weekend away to DePauw and Centre. A conference championship is on the line as well as a tournament berth. We're looking for quality in our play more than anything at this stage...and if we play well, we'll give ourselves a good chance to get results.

Senior Night

On Friday evening we celebrated the careers of 4 outstanding seniors as they began their final regular season weekend at home. Below is a copy of the script read by THE Voice of the Tigers, James Hill:

LINDSEY NEUBAUER—Lindsey Neubauer is a Senior transfer from Farmington, New Mexico by way of Texas Lutheran University. Before arriving on Trinity’s campus this fall, Lindsey was the Freshman-of-the-year and a two-time All-Conference Player as well as a team captain for her previous team. As a Trinity Soccer player, Lindsey has started 3 matches this year and played in 11, tallying 1 goal and 3 assists for 5 points. Lindsey is pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Management.

LAUREN FOLKMAN—Lauren Folkman is a Senior from Albuquerque, New Mexico. In her senior season, Lauren has served as a team captain and started 11 of the 12 games she has played in providing one assist. She has played an important role in a defensive effort that has conceded only 8 goals on the year. Lauren will be graduating in the spring with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, concentrating on Marketing and Finance. Lauren has participated in the Student Managed Fund and European Union Program. She also is a member of the Blue Key Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Trinity University Dean’s List. Lauren has also been selected to the SCAC Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll in each of her first three years.

DANIKA WRIGHT—Danika Wright is a senior from Alpine, Utah. Danika is serving as a team captain for her second straight year. In this, her senior season, she has started and played in all 14 games registering 4 goals and 1 assist for 9 points, while helping defensively to record a 0.57 Goals Against Average. Danika is a candidate for a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an Accounting concentration. She also plans to pursue her Masters degree in Accounting immediately following her May graduation. Danika has served for the Trinity University Volunteer Action Community while on campus. She is also a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She has been an SCAC Student Athlete Academic Honor Roll recipient. Danika has been recognized as a 1st Team SCAC All-Conference player in her sophomore and Junior seasons as well as last year’s SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-year. She was also voted as a 1st Team Scholar All-American AND an NSCAA 1st Team All-American for the 2009 season.

JORDAN AZAR—Jordan Azar is a senior Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jordan also serves as a team captain for the 2010 team. Jordan has started all 14 games thus far this season notching 5 goals and 6 assists for 16 points. In the classroom, Jordan is pursuing a double-major with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Jordan has participated with the Trinity University Volunteer Action Community as well as being a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society. Jordan has been an All-SCAC honoree in each of her first 3 years as in addition to a member of the SCAC Student Athlete Academic Honor Roll. Last year, Jordan was selected as an NSCAA Scholar All-American.

We were hosting Sewanee, who we had beaten by a large margin for the conference championship in 2009. We knew it would be a tough match and we were prepared to have to battle and earn a result. Our predictions were true. It would take us an hour to finally break them down for a quality goal-scoring opportunity after having surrendered only a couple to them through that point. Jordan threaded a fantastic ball for Kelly who was able to bury it for a 1-0 lead. Jordan yet again would find Abby shortly thereafter to stretch the margin to 2. The match would end there and we would garner 3 important conference points to stay at the top of the league table. Sunday would come quickly and would mark perhaps the final time in 2010 that we would play a home match.

Weighing 7 pounds 3 ounces and measuring 20.5" both baby Evan and his mom are happy and healthy!! Congratulations Seth and Brooke on this wonderful blessing. All of us from the Trinity Soccer family would like to wish you all nothing but the absolute best.

Friday night marked the opening of the 2010 Alumni Weekend for Trinity University Soccer. It would be the only match scheduled for the weekend and was a great way to kick things off for the current team as well as the former players that were able to return. Former Trinity Soccer players returned from the 1980's, 1990's and the 2000's to watch us put on a show.

We knew going into the game that it would represent an important opportunity to experience a tournament-like competitive environment. A West region matchup against a team who is likely to earn an NCAA tournament berth this post-season would prove to be a good test this time of the year as we prepare to wind down the regular season and hopefully wind-up for what lies beyond.

The week of training had gone pretty well, starting off with a grueling session with Paul S. to evaluate our mid-season fitness as it compares to pre-season. We also spent a good deal of time ensuring our abilities to pass and receive stayed sharp and focusing on our decision making under pressure.

As we took the first possession under the lights, we showed an immediate presence. We imposed our will on the game immediately, yet came up empty after a handful of good opportunities. It seemed to be only a matter of time, and thankfully Kelly ensured it wouldn't require too much to tick away. She made a fantastic turn off a feed from Tara just 12 minutes into the match, splitting a couple of defenders and drawing the keeper. With great composure, she would tuck it inside the far post for her 10th goal of the campaign. The match would continue to tilt in our favor, but it wasn't until the 33rd minute that Abby would convert a chance into a goal that would push her to 11 on the year. Kelly's effectiveness provided yet another assist for the record books. We would go into half-time with an uncomfortable 2-0 lead, knowing it could have and should have been more, but pleased with the general quality that we were getting.

The second half began with a complexion much like that of the first half and would only require seven minutes before Abby would turn and run at their back line and slip Shelby into the box for a clinical finish to make it 3-0. Just seven minutes later, Tara would provide another assist, this time playing a little first-time ball to Danika off a possession change. Danika took a great first touch and smacked a ball from 20 yards out to put things further out of reach. If the scoring had stopped there, Danika would likely have had a goal of the night candidate, but Katy found a ball in the 72nd minute on the right-hand side cutting in, and absolutely crushed a ball off the inside of the far top corner ricocheting back to the opposite side-netting to make it 5-0.

We got great minutes from the majority of the roster which proved beneficial on many levels. We are continuing to press our collective envelope...striving to get better with each day. This week's training will be preparing us for our final regular season home weekend for four seniors with conference matches against Sewanee and Oglethorpe. These matches are critical for us to keep pressing for the Conference championship. Rest assured, our focus is on Friday night...

C'mon all you Alums...come back and watch your little sisters get after it on Friday night under the lights as we play host to Chapman in an important West Region matchup. Before and during the match, we will be heightening awareness of breast cancer and will be taking donations to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation and their ongoing effort to Find a Cure! The team will be wearing pink during warm-up to honor all those who have been effected by breast cancer, either first-hand or through someone we love. We ALL can make a difference!! Please join us in our effort.

Drawing Attention...

The Trinity Soccer team continued yet again to climb the polls this week to #9. It's always nice to be ranked in October, but we know the Final Ranking in December is the only one that matters...

Also, Junior Forward Abigail Loar has been recognized for the second time in three weeks as the SCAC Player-of-the-week for her 3 goals and 4 assists in the two weekend matches.

As a side note...teammate and classmate Kelly Watts is keeping pace recording three goals and an assist herself. Both players are neck and neck as they have been for much of the past three years. Together, they are quite the handful for opposition.

Defensively, after some early season woes, Katie and the backline have been awfully stingy...allowing only one goal in the past 6 games.

As a team, we remain humble and renew our commitment daily to getting better and reaching a consistency of high quality.

Trinity -v- BSC

The second half of the SCAC Weekend kicked off at noon on Sunday against a Birmingham Southern side that had experienced some mixed results up to that point. We knew we would be in for a competitive match and it would be very important to establish ourselves early.

Kelly was excited to display her sense of urgency as she was incredible from the start with pressuring backs and running at them. She took a throw-in on a quick turn at the edge of the final third in front of our bench, split two defenders and buried one to the far post. Everyone was in slow motion and she was in fast-forward! What a start!! Not long after, in the 17th minute, Jordan served in a corner where Abby would challenge in the air...the ball got up and then back down to Lindsay's feet at the near post where she'd quickly slip it through the traffic of players and into the net. The pressure would begin to subside as the half went on. We gave up a few counters in the last bit of the half and with two seconds remaining on the clock, they would find space to serve to the feet of their forward, evade a couple of tackles and tuck one inside the far post just before the half. So now a 2-0 game in fifteen minutes turns into a 2-1 game at halftime...to no surprise, we all were very disappointed and they all of a sudden felt like they were in the game.

We knew we had to tidy things up in midfield and make sure if we lost the ball that we organized quickly and stopped forward service. We needed better starting positions at the back, and up front we had to be dangerous.

Going into the second half, the theme of urgency came back to us and Abby would streak in from the weak side to finish off a double assist fro m Lindsey and Katy to give us some breathing room at 3-1. That proved to be all we would need and all we would get in so far as goals. We created some good chances but did not capitalize on them, but perhaps more importantly, we didn't surrender a single shot in the second half.

We were thrilled to conclude the weekend with another 6 points in conference. The coming week will bring a break from conference play. We will be welcoming all Alumni of the program for a single match Friday evening against Chapman (CA) for a very important regional match. The weekend will be a celebration of the past and present with a special recognition of the 2000 team that made the first ever Final 4 for Trinity Soccer. Welcome Back Trinity Soccer Alumni!!

Friday Night Lights

Friday night started off another home weekend against conference opponents Millsaps and Birmingham Southern. We had been training throughout the week with Millsaps on our mind as they would be the first team we would face. While we intend to keep perspective of preparing for the upcoming match on our schedule, the primary focus is one of readying ourselves for our game and standard.

6 pm came and the whistle blew...it wouldn't take us too long to find the back of the net as Abby battled into the box drawing defenders and slotted Lindsey on a little overlap. Unfortunately, we would not have much more to say about the first half of play other than a large amount of the possession and a few half-chances. There was a call for a lift of energy and quality during the second half and that is exactly what would transpire.

Danika found some space near the top of the box and smashed one by the keeper in the second minute of the second half. A little over three minutes later, Abby found Kelly for the third goal of the game. 26 SECONDS later, Abby would take a feed from Jordan and claim a goal of her own. Kelly returned the favor to Abby nine minutes after Abby's first goal as she assisted her second tally. The trade-off would continue a couple minutes later as Kelly claimed her second goal of the match and Abby notched her third assist. Abby nearly had a "hat" full of assists AND goals, but the Millsaps goalkeeper made a nice save to prevent the double-triple. with under five minutes to go, Hannah snuck into the mouth of the goal and took a couple of redirects to score the extra point of the night taking the count to seven.

With the previous year's result being 1-0, we were pleased with our offensive production, as well as holding them without a single shot. We expected Birmingham Southern to be a tougher test on Sunday and were going to need to refocus rather quickly.

Conference Recognition

Two more Trinity Soccer players are recognized by the conference office for their performances over the past week.

Jenny White and Jordan Azar were selected as the Defensive and Offensive Players-of-the-Week in Conference. Jenny helped provide a defensive presence that allowed only four shots in three matches without surrendering a goal in that span. Jordan notched two goals and two assists during that same time to garner her recognition, leading a barrage of offensive production that included 14 goals in three matches.

Jenny and Jordan join Allyson Thrall and Abigail Loar as the Tiger contingent to be recognized this season as top performers in conference.

The Rise Continues

Trinity is still on the outside looking into the top 10 from the #11 spot.

Trinity cracked the top 10 again this season after the early season set-back. The Tigers are ranked 10th in this weeks poll.

Trinity Soccer Family

Reflecting back upon the last several days brings about a sense of excitement, amazement, gratitude and pride for what Trinity Soccer has evolved into. Trinity Soccer Friends and Family weekend is an annual event where friends and family come from all over to celebrate our current players as they play host to two opponents, but it also serves as our Family Reunion of sorts, complete with a Saturday night reception and celebration. Family traveled in from near and far, San Antonio, Austin, Houston and Dallas...Kansas, New Mexico, Florida and Washington...Colorado, California and Utah, New York by way of Costa Rica...even South Africa!

Friday night's match-up was against University of Dallas, who will be joining the conference in 2011 with the departure of Depauw. The girls got started fairly quickly as Abby took a ball from Kelly and buried one past the keeper. Not long later, Jordan was able to find the back of the net followed by Abby's second finish of the night just before the half-hour mark of the first half. Shelby then made it 4-0 jut before the end of the half, tallying her third goal of her first collegiate season. The second half had a much slower start to it, but Abby would bag a third goal in the 76th minute for her hat-trick. Sam then closed things out at 6-0 off a double assist from Kristina and Kelly in the 83rd. The game ended up being one way traffic throughout and it was a nice way to start the weekend in front of our families with every rostered player contributing time on the field for the win.

Saturday evening's reception was exceptional. Dinner. Video presentations. Family Photos. Senior recognition. 300 attendees. 63 players. Two teams. One Family. It amazes me every year. We all are so blessed to be a part of this incredible legacy. Truly priceless.

Sunday afternoon would prove to be more of a test, as AC came to town with an identical record to ours at 9-1. The previous two years it took us over 100 minutes to finally take the win and we were determined to make this year a different storyline. The first half, however showed a game played between the 18 yard boxes with neither team being particularly threatening, and nobody looking to take risks...consequently...2 shots to 1 through 45 minutes. The second half started off better as we seemed to have a more aggressive temperament. A few tactical changes as well as some positional changes gave us a new complexion and it would prove positive in the end. Katy would break in a few times behind the back line, but it would be a variation that would create our first goal off a ball from Jordan to break the seal in the 76th minute. Kelly then notched one in the 85th off a nice little ball from Valerie to end the match at 2-0. We would pressure far more tallying 10 shots in the final stanza to our opponent's zero.

In all, a fantastic weekend with another two wins and an important three points in conference to try and keep pace with the top conference performers to date. This weekend brings two more conference teams to Trinity.

Monday Night Football

Our return home....

Monday night marked only our second match of the year at home. UMHB would come to our field after a tropical storm forced an early date to postponement, but this night would be a beautiful fall evening in South Texas. Just over a quarter of an hour into the match, Lindsay would take a ball out of the air from Danika with a very lengthy touch to loft it over the reach of the goalkeeper for her second goal in as many matches. Kelly would find the back of the net just prior to the half-hour mark off an assist from Shelby. The first half would expire at 2-0 in spite of us taking 20 shots. To start the second half, Kristina would strike within the second minute off of Lauren's assist. Katy would find the scoresheet next off a combination from Jordan and Lindsey in midfield, and then Jordan followed that up with a goal of her own which was the goal of the night after Abby slipped a ball across the six. Abby finished things off to make it 6-0 thanks to Valerie setting her up right in front of goal. This marked 11 goals in two matches at home to date and would be the start of a long home stand leading into the rest of October. Good to be home!!

Preparation continues...

Another road match to finish out the long first half of the season would prove to be favorable for our squad. Away to Southwestern where we had previously lost 2 years prior was our last road match to end a long stretch of away games during the first half of the season. he match was the 7th of 8 games played thus far this season on the road. Also a conference fixture, we were clear that no matter what, we had to come away with a full three points to stay up with the top teams in conference. Several other teams have really put together a great first half of the 2010 campaign and in order to give ourselves the best chance at tournament play, you absolutely cannot drop points...home or away.

The match would start with us controlling much of the play and the flow of the game. We looked dangerous right away, but continued to struggle with consistency of the final ball. Several good opportunities were squandered just before they become great chances...and consequently...no bulging of the back of the net...UNTIL Abby broke free across the face of the back line to find Kelly who cleverly redirected a ball into Katy's path who then buried one past the keeper to break the seal.

The rest of the first half would look very similar to the time prior to the goal...possession, opportunity but not really many chances.

The second half actually lost a little fizz although we would find the net twice more before the match concluded. Tara snuck in behind on the right side and first-timed a great ball to Lindsay on the back post who sent it back where it came from and tucked nicely into the side-netting off her head. The last one came as Lauren freed herself about 25 yards out on the right hand side and drove a ball low and hard towards the back post where Kelly would force the ball and her defender into the near side of the net just inside the post.

We still are looking to break out...we've had some great moments and some not-so-great moments thus far, as all teams do, but we continue to strive toward a higher standard.

6 Points Down in Conference

The match against Rhodes was one we knew would be a battle. We lost for the first time in program history two years prior on the very same field, though it was under water last time. We stood stunned in 2008 as the game ended and the opposing coach ran out into the middle of the field into a head first slide as he joined the team in celebration....something none of us there on that day would ever forget.

The match started at a frantic pace. Neither side displayed much composure nor created much quality soccer. It seemed more like a tennis match than a soccer match with many possession changes and lots of long strikes with none of them finding the net. Tara went on as a sub and created some difficulty for their outside back that would eventually result in a goal. Abby broke free from the left hand side of the attacking 1/3 moving right. She drew numbers and slotted Tara in on a little diagonal where she had time and space to finish. The game would go into the half at 1-0.

The second half would start off with some sustained pressure for us going forward. Finally after 20-odd corners over the weekend we'd convert as Jordan dropped a nice ball off Abby's foot for what would be the game-winner. The game lost it's quality again and would stay that way through the final whistle that was beaten out by a counter-attack goal after a combination of poor attacking and even worse defending on our part. The 89th minute showed Trinity 2-Rhodes 0. Fifteen seconds later Rhodes added a confidence boost with a late goal to end the game 2-1.

We were pleased with six points in conference away from home far more than with how we accumulated the last three in Memphis. With that said, we'll put it behind us and look forward to the 7th of 8 games thus far this season on the road away to Southwestern...another environment where we saw ourselves drop a match last time we were there.

Conference Opener

What an absolutely beautiful setting for our conference opener of the 2010 campaign. The surface was immaculate. The dreary day of rain had transformed into a stunning night. The conversation continued to build and describe our ambitions and standards, but by no means was it going to define us. Conference results are the ones that get you into the tournament or lock you out, and we've been a part of both circumstances...knowing clearly which we prefer.

The pre-game preparation was sound, our focus seemed to be in place. The commitment to our standard was propelling the girls in the right direction.

The match started with loads of possession and space through the middle third, but the dilemma of 18 players in the attacking box is always difficult to manage. The speed of play was a little slower than was prescribed and consequently we were slow to exploit the small spaces and channels. Abby and Kelly looked dangerous, but the game was becoming a lullaby. Finally, twenty minutes in, Abby cut in on a ball from Jordan and snuck one by the keeper to break the seal and put us up 1-0. Getting the first one is so critical against a defensive system, although it usually opens things up a little more than it did. We were committed to press. Less than ten minutes later Jordan would add her own tally with another cracker to the far post. Shortly before the half, Sam would push the third of the day over the keeper to the far post off a header, assisted by Tara and Hannah.

The second half would start very strong. Less than ten minutes in, Jordan served in a corner that was deflected out of the area. Jenny got ahold of it quickly and found Kelly who was able to quickly turn on it and ripple the net for her third goal of the year. Lots of changes were made throughout the match and all our healthy players found some time to impact the result on the day. Abby got in for a quick spell late in the game and converted on her second of the day and the season, nearly notching a third.

In the end, Trinity 5, Hendrix 0. Three points in conference to start off the road trip was what we came for and it was what we took away. Off to Memphis today for a match tomorrow against Rhodes. ...proving to do...

Home Opener

Alas, we made our way back to home soil for what turned out to be our Home Opener of the 2010 campaign. As is the case every year, many discussions lead us into the season with regards to what our collective expectations are. Things had been coming to a head and many people, including myself had begun to grow weary of rhetoric. It was time to bring the "purple cow" NOW. The girls started off and looked very strong. Attacking players were proving to be dangerous in the final 1/3, midfielders found their rhythm and did a great job of connecting, and we looked organized and stingy in our back 1/3. UCSC took a difficult road on their way to San Antonio, and we were determined to make it even less pleasant. We imposed ourselves on the game...something we had really yet to due up to that point through the previous four matches. We created a large number of dangerous attacks but found ourselves to lack that final ball/finish. Lindsey slid Kelly through at the edge of the attacking third about a half-hour into the match and Kelly was able to outrun everyone to the ball and tuck it into the far side-netting from just inside the area.It was a well deserved and well needed tally for Kelly and the team. The 1-0 lead would carry us into halftime, and while we were pleased with the standard of play, we knew we needed to separate ourselves from the opposition. For the second straight match, Jordan took it to heart and got on the score sheet early in the second half with a truly world-class free kick from about 25 yards out on the left side of the "D" that rattled into the top corner on the far post after Katy was fouled on a forward run.That foul stopped Katy from completing what might well have turned into a goal of her own, but would not stop her completely as she found some space cutting across the back line of UCSC and smacking a ball right up under the bar to beat the keeper for the third time on the day.The pressure continued to mount on UCSC and we continued to control most of the play. Tara would win a corner on McGinlay Corner and fellow first-year Meredith would serve in a great ball to Danika who got up high and crushed a header into the near post for her second goal in three games from the center back position.The first-year class continued to provide value to the early stages of the season with two new classmates linking up for the fifth and final goal of the day in the 79th minute. Hannah found Valerie for her first goal of her collegiate career.Katie and a back line committee remained strong conceding only a couple of decent chances but preserving the second clean sheet of the season...something we have grown accustomed to enjoying in the recent past but has evaded us more often than we are comfortable with. The match and result were critical for a great number of reasons, but namely for enabling us to see what standard we are capable of and to motivate us to uphold this standard moving forward. We fly out tomorrow morning for our first conference trip of the season to Little Rock and Memphis with the expectation of playing our best soccer to date. Both opponents made us work for every little thing 12 months ago and we expect to earn anything we are fortunate enough to take away from the weekend's games. Training has been focused. We have lots we intend to prove.

Two Close Wins

Coming out of a long weekend on the road with two wins is always a sense of accomplishment especially when they are two significant in-region wins. Playing away in Richardson and Tyler has become a familiar trip against familiar opposition who make things very difficult at their home venues.

The result on Friday night at UTD was one the girls were determined to get under their belts especially after a very sub-par performance the week prior to a vary strong Hardin-Simmons squad. The play started well controlling the tempo, giving away very little, but also getting very little to show. The first-years continued to provide a lift in the final 1/3 s Shelby broke through between two defenders at the edge of the "D" and found the top corner inside the far post. Not long after, we conceded on a long service into the box where a UTD player found a seam between two backs and tucked a header inside the near post. Despite all the chances, we ended 90 minutes even at 1. Shortly into the first OT, Kelly squirmed into the box splitting pressure off the dribble and was taken down from behind just before she could slip the ball past the charging keeper. Danika, a senior captain, stepped up to take her attempt from 12 yards as she normally does and converted for the penalty. It was a win, but we were far from satisfied.

UTT proved to be equally as frustrating in spite of the result. The noon kick-off came with blazing hot temperatures. The girls were lethargic and couldn't quite seem to find their composure amidst the heat, frustration and opposition. The first half was not very eventful in the end although they seemed to be able to apply a bit more pressure in their final 1/3 than we could. The conversation at halftime called for some attention to details and for players to step up their individual performance. Jordan must have taken it to heart as she was able to convert an early chance at the top of the box beating the keeper to the near post. Unfortunately, we did not manage the lead well as we experienced yet another mental breakdown defensively that left an opposing attacker with space at the edge of the six and they capitalized with an equalizer. We showed resolve though, as Dana took a similar opportunity to Jordan's and beat the keeper low to the near post from the right side of the "D" to put us back up. The girls held that through the remainder of the match to secure the victory.

We're sitting at Olive Garden for our pre-game lunch...conversation fills the room...thoughts fill my mind. We find ourselves in an interesting position...one we are certainly not used to. Sitting at 1-1 and following one of the most lop-sided losses that I can recall this program ever experiencing. That said, the eternal realist in me is full of optimism for what lies ahead of this version of the Trinity Soccer family. We have a difficult match ahead of us tonight against a historically stingy team. Our focus however, is OUR standard. Though it is very early on in this season, the girls are in pursuit of their identity. We are a family of fantastic students that have a desire to do things other Trinity teams have fallen short of. The competitive standard is to play their very best game...every game. That is a large task, but getting better every day seems the only option. As a staff we are excited to see what decisions these young women will make to charter their journey as One.

Spain Trip 2010: Day 7

Today was our final day in Spain and what a trip it has been! All of the sites, people, and culture that we have taken in this week have been awesome and it’s a bummer to be leaving. However, on our last day we had a few things to do. First, most wanted to see the Sagrada Familia from the inside and take the audio tour. To be honest…however much the exterior might put you in a state of shock and awe, the interior will do you even better! It was amazing to hear how many different architects from many different countries have put in work to design what is shown today. Furthermore the brilliance of Antoni Gaudí, the original architect, is undeniable in the design and concept of the church. Climbing to the top of the steeples gave an amazing view of the city!

Next, some others visited The Barcelona Cathedral. It has a different design that the Sagrada Familia but it is just as elegant inside and out. Both of these cathedrals have long histories and demonstrate the importance and vision of the church centuries ago.

From there it was off to lunch at another small and delicious restaurant off “la rambla” and then shopping! The girls made it their quest to find that awesome pair of shoes or that particular item they had wanted the whole trip. To their credit, the items they brought back were awesome and very unique! I doubt most of the shoes they bought could be found in the states. After the shopping experience it was time to meet up at the Hardrock Café and be taken back to the hotel for the final dinner.

Although buffet meals can get redundant that was not the case for the final meal. Most came to the conclusion as they passed through the line: “hey I can’t fit everything onto one plate….” It was clearly a time to sub divide and take as many helpings as could fit. The meat, fruit, and dessert were all delicious and a key note address by Lance and Gabe clearly wrapped up a great trip on a high note. Having some family there also made the final meal really special and allowed the parents to experience TU soccer from a rarely seen point of view. The trip back to the hotel did not go without its hilarious moments. All I can say is ask Abby… From there we were all packed and ready to make the long ride back home the next morning.

Spain Trip 2010: Day 6

Today, we got up early to take a break from Spain and see a little more of Europe by travelling to Southern France. After eating our breakfast buffet (which strangely included French fries as an option), we took off on the bus for a two hour road trip. The majority of the team continued to show their exhaustion, as usual, by falling asleep almost instantly on the bus ride. Although, I envied their ability to rest on the bus, I thoroughly enjoyed the scenery on the way to France, which included beautiful landscapes of farms, old, stone homes, and large, snowcapped mountains.
Once we arrive in Perpengion, the small town of France, we were greeted by our tour guide for a short tour around. We went to a beautiful French Cathedral first. When we first entered the church, the color scheme was dark, but as we walked deeper, the architecture became much lighter and more welcoming. The beauty was stunning, with stained glass windows, statues and paintings. This specific church was dedicated to St. John the Baptist, indicated by the centerpiece behind the alter. The centerpiece was a massive wall with images that told the story of St. Johns life. Right in the middle of the wall, there was a small hole. This hole was used for special effects during services. Doves would fly out of it, symbolizing hope to the people. Two other holes used for similar purposes were located on the ceiling. Not only would doves fly from these, but also fire and light. I found it extremely interesting that these special effects could be performed so long ago, in almost as good of fashion as they could be today with our modern technology.
Next, we visited the home of a very wealthy merchant. Strange and slightly disturbing images bordered the home. It is speculated that the small, sculpted images represented the seven deadly sins. For example, the presence of a lion symbolized pride and a sculpture of two merchants doing business symbolized greed. The home was enormous considering its age, and the amount of detailed décor inside amazed me.
After that, we were set free for lunch and got to shop for several hours. We were all extremely excited to shop, and took off immediately to buy as many things as we could. Of course, I tried a crepe for dessert, which was delicious! Abby and I split an entire giant, pizza sized crepe topped with chocolate and bananas, and ate every last bite of it.
I also found an awesome antique store where I bought a 200 year old book, which may have been my favorite purchase of the whole trip even though I have no idea how to read French. Everyone else seemed to find good things too, indicated by the number of bags we all had. But I think Lance may have had the best time of all of us since had definitely had the most bags.
When we got back to Spain, we ate dinner and had girl talk-part 2, on the beach. We sat in a circle and shared embarrassing childhood stories for a few hours before crashing into bed. Overall, my favorite day on the trip.

Spain Trip 2010: Day 5

Well we're currently chillin' here in the Atlanta airport waiting for our 9:30 flight which has coincidentally become an 11:00 flight...Dana, Henderson and I are attempting to avoid going a full 24 hours without sleep by power napping on the floor. Desperate times call fordesperate measures :)

Well backtracking a bit, Thursday was a really great day. We left at a leisurely 10 am after a solid continental breakfast at the Guillermo Tell Hotel in Barcelona for the Salvador Dali museum about 2 hours north. For those unfarmiliar with Dali, you're not alone... In fact, I don't think that the majority of the
population gets him. He gives a new meaning to the distinction between genius and insanity. Brilliant? Yes. Odd? Very very. I would absolutely recommend going if you ever have the chance though- it is the most random, ingenius three story complex just filled with his art. It's pretty legit.
After el museo we headed a bit further north toward a hotel right on the beach called Panorama where we ate a buffet lunch at the hotel- lots of buffets this trip.Lots and lots of buffets. Delish, but deliscious buffets are dangerous combinations sometimes...
After lunch we each took a quality siesta (or as Lippie
says, "fiesta"- tehe) then prepped for our last game. It was a nice
field- solid turf, well maintained... We drew. It wasn't particularly
our best game, but not bad considering the amount of travel-lag going
on. It made us all really stoked for next fall though. That
evening we really just hung out at the hotel, had a little GT (girl
talk, naturally) and crashed. For sure a successful day...Katie Garret ('13 Freshman)

Spain Trip 2010: Day 4

Today has thus far been my favorite day in Spain. We began with a trip
up to the monestary Monserrat. It's quite the mountain in comparison
with Barcelona at sea level, and even had some lingering snow. The
grounds were beautiful, but nothing in comparison with the exquisite
cathedral, which we visited for a performance by their boy's choir. We
walked up the stairs afterwards to visit the famous Madonna and rub
the orb for good fortune. Although not Catholic myself, I could not
help but appreciate the magic of the faith and I felt humbled in such
a place of worship.

We enjoyed another three course lunch at a 500 year old house, and
sampled lentils, rabbit, sausage, and our favorite desserts - all
classic to Cataluyna. Not for the first time and certainly not for the
last, we left feeling stuffed and ready to siesta.
But there was no time for a siesta today - we had to hurry off to the
FC Barcelona match versus Stuttgart! We traveled via subway and met
with passionate fans - showing tattoos of their team's crest and
singing fight songs. The atmosphere was similar in a local restaurant
where we joined along in song with the rest of the crowd. We made
friends with some Stuttgart fans who had flown from all over the world
for the game, and felt quite popular as they insisted on getting
pictures with the cute Americans.

When we finally arrived at the stadium, it was PACKED! It looked
nothing like the empty stadium we had visited only the day before.
Their motto is Mes Que Un Club (more than a club) and boy was that
correct. They were gods and soccer was religion. The excitement was
infectious, and a buzz surrounded the entire stadium. We made friends
with some local Spanish teenagers who spoke little English, and did
our best to immitate their songs and gestures to not look quite so out
of place. The game ended 4-0 FCB, with two incredible goals by Messi.
Everytime he scored the crowd chanted his name and bowed to him. To
see him play was more than an honor. It was a nice reminder that my
beloved sport truly was an art, and he is definitely the Picasso of
his time.
After the game we met the tour guide replacing Yan, and he is much
more popular with the team to say the least. Very nice, very
accomadating, and very cute! We followed with a classic night in
Spain - late dinner and a pickpocketing adventure on the subway. As
Lance so appropriately put it, "pickpocketers are as good at what they
do as Messi is with a ball." We leave Barcelona tomorrow for a few
days to explore the coast and Southern France. Can't wait to get back
here Saturday.

Spain Trip 2010: Day 3

In the morning we went to Park Guell , which consisted of artwork from Gaudi. It was incredible to see such unique artistry in the architecture of the columns, open areas, and overlooks. The park was originally built one-hundred years ago by a wealthy Mayor of Barcelona who hoped to have all his rich friends move in to his utopia. The project failed, however what remains of it today is magnificent looking. There were a lot of people at the park and I really liked the performers who performed Spanish guitar music! The details of the mosaics on the walls were so brightly colored and so intricate. This particular style of art is probably one of my favorites and I just discovered that this trip.
Later on in the day we took a tour of FC Barcelona’s stadium. It was unreal to see it empty without the screaming fans and to just take in the tranquil atmosphere of what is normally extremely loud and hectic. I literally got chills the moment I saw the field. To get the opportunity to play in front of that many people and to be a part of such a major part of your country’s culture would be the most fulfilling experience. The stadium included a soccer museum that included tributes to each player as well as video clips of their teams memorable moments.
At night we played against San Gabriel which was definitely without a doubt the best team I have ever played against. Playing with boys growing up, each player had developed such incredible foot skills that made their game look so graceful. Their talent was unreal and it made me realize the capabilities of female soccer player. Our whole lives we have heard it’s because women’s bodies are built so differently that we aren’t able to obtain the same athletic traits of males. But each of these girls played how a boy would play; they were so technically apt and were extremely quick. Even though the score reflected an intense beating, it was a great experience to be able to play against them. It humbled us knowing that there is always someone better than you. Yes we have had so much success, but it is so important to get beat once in awhile. Handling our disappointments will only make us better....Lauren Folkman ('11 Captain)

Spain Trip 2010: Day 2

Barcelona is awesome. Yesterday we went to a beautiful Catholic church. They have been building it for 150 years and still aren´t finished. Our tour guide said it will take at least another 50 years to build. The detail on the stone outside was absolutely incredible. After walking around the church for 20 minutes and enjoying it´s elegance, we went to the soccer store (apparently it is the biggest soccer store in Barcelona). Many girls bought FC Barcelona jerseys and other great paraphernalia.

After spending half our money on the first day, we went to a restaurant on the ocean where we enjoyed a 3 course meal next to the waves. The food was fabulous. We headed back to the hotel after lunch to take a siesta with the rest of the city. We all enjoyed some sleep (except those who were on the floor with the high school Spanish girls). Then, we headed over to our field to play our first game. We won 3 to 1, but the game was much different as there really were no fouls. Any time we touched one of their players the referee called a foul. But we still came out on top and were happy with our result.

Finally, we got back to the hotel, showered, and got dressed and went out to downtown Barcelona to a discoteca (dance club) to celebrate a team mates birthday! It was much fun. I must go eat breakfast now...Danika Wright (´11 Captain)

Spain Trip 2010: Day 1

After a LONG 12 hours of traveling, we finally made it to Barcelona, Spain. Although we were all delirious from a lack of sleep, we were excited for the full day planned upon arrival. We arrived to a very animated tour guide (aka he sang quite a few songs to us in different languages)who was enthusiastic to show us his city and Spain. We toured the city and learned about the biggest, longest and best streets in Barcelona. From there we had lunch at Spain´s unique version of a buffet. Nothing like a mix of Spanish food with the always favorite American dish of pizza and frozen yogurt.
After lunch we were told that it´s best to keep yourself busy to not fall asleep so we quickly checked into the hotel and were off to one of Barcelona´s beautiful beaches for a fun yet intense game of sand soccer. The game was interesting to say the least as sand ended up in eyes, teeth and shorts. It took nearly the entire game for most to adjust to the differences between playing on sand and grass. A very enjoyable experience however as not too many people get to say they experienced playing soccer on the beaches of Barcelona.

After much needed showers back at the hotel, we were off on the local subway system to enjoy dinner in downtown Barcelona. For those of you who don´t know, Spanish culture is to sleep but not at the typical American hours. They nap during the day and then the city comes truly alive at night. We were shown several different places and areas to eat at by our tour guide and then left to explore the city.I know many of us got to experience different foods that we definitely wouldn´t likely experience in American culture. We gathered back around 10:30 to head back to the hotel for a much needed good night´s sleep anxious to spend yet another day in Barcelona...Jordan Azar (´11 Captain)

2009 Season Roadtrip (Oglethorpe/Sewanee): Conference Champions

We return home for our final regular season weekend to be played in front of our home crowd of the campus and San Antonio communities, families, friends and a special group; the Trinity Soccer Alumini.The girls have proven to be in great form over the course of the season, but particularly over the past couple of weeks. After having had to cancel a match on the road to Mary Hardin Baylor last Monday, we departed campus very early for our flight to Atlanta on our way to a beautiful area of Atlanta near the campus of Oglethorpe University. After lunch and a nap, we made our way to Oglethorpe and had one of our best sessions of the season...on and off the field in just under an hour. The girls were sharp and focused. Just before hopping back on the bus for the hotel, I was able to paint a picture that showed two wins on the trip meant an SCAC Conference Championship...something they have been seeking with vigor after falling short of our expectations in '08. A comfortable evening back in the hotel for dinner and a productive conversation just before bedtime left us where we needed to be in preparation for our match Friday afternoon.The match got underway and so did our offensive production as we tallied the first of our eight goals on the afternnon within 0:20 of the first whistle. As it ended, Abs had a hat-trick, Kelly had four assists, Kristina and Alex each buried one for the first time this season, Bri had a couple to stretch her goals in consecutive games streak to 9, and our team defense notched another shutout. We gave up very few opportunities on the defensive end, although our organization and coordination of movement off the ball were issues we felt would need to be addressed and better managed on the Sunday. In all, we had solid performances from every player on our roster and were pleased with the result.Friday night highlighted our seniors as we combined with the men's seniors and staff, as well as some family that had made the trip to celebrate their carreers on this, their final regular season away trip. Alex, Breezy, Julez and Beks were accompanied by Koontzy and her family, and alum, Lisa Smith joined us at Maggiano's. It was great to see Lisa at the match as well as more recent alum Claire Edwards who drove up from Athens. Both are doing post-graduate work at Emory and UGa respectively. Lisa is nearing the end of her PHd in Psychology while Claire is pursuing her career in the physical sciences. After we stuffed our faces and bellies it was back to the hotel for a sound night of sleep and an early wake-up and departure.We decided to head about 45 minutes the opposite direction of Sewanee's campus in Tennessee where we would play our Sunday match in an attempt to secure the 2009 SCAC Championship as well as the AQ to the NCAA Tournament. The detour was with the intent to support our men's and women's cross-country teams in the conference meet that was held just outside of Atlanta on the Saturday morning. As it turned out we missed the men's race but made it in time to see the women run and finish. It was pouring rain and quite chilly, and while we weren't envious of them running in those conditions, we remembered playing in equal or worse conditions ourselves. In the end, it was great to be able to cheer them on while away from home...fans on the road are great to have!!A couple of movies and a lunch at Cracker Barrell later we arrived at Sewanee Mountain. The views along the road between locations were truly beautiful, but The Mountain at that time of year was breathtaking. Our bi-yearly trip to the WWII memorial and photo ops with the players overlooking the valley below is always a favorite...so very serene. Another meal catered back to the hotel and a costume contest, as it was Halloween, left us with a solid night of rest to be had.Sunday arrived and it was off to a nice team breakfast and then we headed down to watch the first half of our men's game. We got to see them play out their opportunity to lock up conference in their match, and then attempt to do the same. That is exactly what we did. Going into the match, Sewanee were guaranteed at least a second place finish in conference going into the match, but a win against us could put them in great position to get the AQ and leave us with a lot of work to do to dig out of a hole. Warm-up was a little concerning as we looked lethargic and were not sharp. As the first whistle went, I was not put to ease, but it was a little better than I thought it would be. it would take a quarter of an hour to put ourselves in the lead as Lindsay would get on the board redirecting a ball off a corner from close range. Before a half hour would pass, Kelly played a fantastic ball into Bri who did well to collect and finish past the keeper, but the half would see no more goals from either side. The concern at halftime was to ensure our quality stayed high and that we continued to apply pressure on both sides of the ball. It had been very physical to that point and we expected more of the same. A minute into the second half Kelly was chopped down in the box and Dan stretched the lead to three. Apparently we were still patting ourselves on the back as we gave up only our fourth goal of the season not twenty 0:20 later. As if that weren't enough of a concern, we committed a foul inside our box and faced a penalty only a minute after it went 3-1. Sewanee didn't capitalize and we proceeded to withstand a little more pressure before we got ahold of the game with two consecutive goals from Abs and sealed it off with Lips serving a ball to Lauren for her their first assist and goal of the campaign. 90:00 expired and we had won the match as well as the conference. We guaranteed our position in the tournament with two games still to be played, which is the first time we had done that so early in quite some time.Leaving the mountain for the Nashville Airport with four wins and two conference championships for Trinity Soccer made for a fantastic trip. We face the defending SCAC Champions in Rhodes College on Friday evening at 8 pm, and that is as far as we will focus our collective energy and thought. We know a solid week of training is a necessity for us. It will be great being back home in front of our crowd on alumni weekend as conference champions. We'll be ready to play like it....LK
